Many low- and middle-income countries have developed national strategies for disaster risk reduction. But ensuring the inclusion of all sectors of society, especially the private sector, remains a challenge. This year’s International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction on October 13th focuses on the importance of international cooperation and partnerships. This is an opportunity to reaffirm the role of the private sector in reducing the impacts of human-induced and natural hazards in disaster-prone countries.

The UNDP-OCHA Connecting Business initiative (CBi) and UNDRR ARISE Africa held a joint webinar on “Strengthening the Role of the African Private Sector in Disaster Management” to highlight good practices, as well as challenges, in public-private partnerships. Participants shall gain awareness of the different opportunities for private sector engagement in disaster risk management in Sub-Saharan Africa.  This session helped strengthen the role of private sector networks in disaster risk reduction.
