The people of Sri Lanka went to the polls on 5th August 2020 to elect their representatives at the parliament. Conducting them amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and potential intersecting disasters becomes challenging. However, these risks should not threaten the right to vote.
The ‘Right to Vote Amidst Disasters’ guidelines and operational plans jointly formulated by the Elections Commission and the Disaster Management Centre overcomes barriers and prepares for collective response in the event of a crisis. It provides the confidence and will to exercise one’s right and for officials to pave the way.
